January 2001: Men
New Ways with Suits

If you have decided to treat yourself to a new suit for the New Year, you now have many options to choose from. Say goodbye to the traditional navy pinstripe and opt instead for black or grey; 6-button high closures; or subtle tones of warm shades. Shirts and ties look best when bright and bold - or replace them altogether with a T-shirt, V-neck sweater, or polo-neck for a more relaxed look.

Colour Directions

Charcoal or black works best for the latest styles - especially for wool or corded fabrics. All shades of grey from charcoal to light silver are key fashion colours for the season especially when worn with flashes of brightness - blue, red or purple. Casual suits are best in an updated form with fabrics of brown or taupe in a loose linen style.

Topcoats

To protect your new suit and keep you warm in the next winter months, a topcoat is essential - as well as being an easy way to update your look. Look for straight, unbelted raincoats in rubberized fabrics with fly-front fastenings that conceal the buttons. If you prefer a shorter style, try a short black or navy nylon, zip-front raincoat with or without a hood. Detachable linings - wool or quilted nylon - can help your topcoat double as a winter or summer garment.
